NBC is almost ready to roll out a new Knight Rider two-hour TV movie/backdoor pilot in less than two weeks. Things have run pretty smoothly, except for when Justin Bruening, who plays Mike Traceur (estranged son of Michael Knight), hurt his knee. But it looks like there was at least one other bump for the production, according to SciFi Wire.
Will Arnett was hired to be the voice of K.I.T.T. on the movie, but then a contractual conflict of interest reared its ugly head. Arnett has done voiceover work for General Motors for almost a decade. Oops, that’s a problem considering the new K.I.T.T. is a black 550 HP Ford Shelby GT500KR Mustang and Ford is actually taking a very active role in the marketing of the telefilm.
Needless to say, when GM discovered this, they asked Arnett to leave the project. But don’t worry - K.I.T.T. has a new voice courtesy of Val Kilmer who came in to replace Arnett.
“We feel really lucky to have Val Kilmer on board for Knight Rider. Val’s voice has truly elevated the character of KITT and brought a whole new level of excitement to this project for us. He completely gets the fun that can be had in the relationship between a guy and his car, it’s just a perfect fit for the show,” executive producer David Bartis said in a statement.
The Knight Rider two-hour movie airs Feb. 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. The film stars Justin Bruening as Mike Traceur, Deanna Russo as Sarah Graiman, Val Kilmer as the voice of K.I.T.T. and Sydney Tamiia Poitier as FBI agent Carrie Ruvai. Fans of the original series will be glad to know that David Hasselhoff has a cameo as Michael Knight.
