Sypnosis

MacArthur Park is a clear-eyed, unsentimental look at the crack subculture at its lowest level. The story takes place in Los Angeles' once elegant MacArthur Park, now notorious for being home to addicts, hookers, homeless and violent gangbangers. The movie penetrates this community to put human faces on the excruciating sickness that is drug addiction.

About her role:
Sydney plays the character of Linda. She skates into this world of crack and poverty literally, by roller-skating into a man at MacArthur Park. He has an addition and Sydney and him date and he seemingly gets her to take a hit. Although she doesn't become an "addict" straight away, she seeks out the drug again at the park meeting, and then makes friends with some of the people who live there.

Ultimately for me the film has way to many characters for you to get a clear look at this world. It's very confusing following so many sub storylines. There is just to many characters and too little development for them. The only character who gets any real development is the lead, his story is good and quite upsetting. Sydney's character seems to just "stumble" into this world and she almost seeks it at times, she seems way to smart to just let this "happen" to her, so I didn't like that about the film. They gave no backstory as to why she might seek out this world and drug and you don't get to know her. She acts way to clingy and needy for a boyfriend and if we had known why her story, it might have been more interesting and just. The sweeter moments in the film come when several people try to stear her character away from The Park and addiction. Linda befriends Blue, and she basically terrifies her away. If there had been less characters and more focus on just a small handful it might have worked better. Sydney is great to watch as always though. I did watch the DVD features and it seems a lot of love went into the making of the movie and getting the story right, so I suppose A for effort.
